Captain’s Log #16: Broadside Sound Fire Their First Shot in Portsmouth

Broadside Sound launch their first official imprint night in Portsmouth with Workforce headlining, backed by a heavy lineup and their own custom soundsystem in an intimate underground setting.

There’s a new wave building on the south coast, and Broadside Sound are stepping up to make their mark properly.

This isn’t just another night. This is their first official party under their own name, and they are not easing into it. They are going all in.

They are taking over Kola Club Basement in Southsea and keeping things exactly how they should be. Dark room, close quarters, a serious sound system and a crowd that is there for one thing, the music.

If you have been to a Pirate Rave Productions event before, you will already know what Broadside Sound bring. They have been a real powerhouse behind the system at our nights, delivering the kind of weight and clarity that drum and bass needs. They have helped shape the energy at our events, and now they are stepping out to do their own thing.

It all started with a simple idea at Boomtown. Why not build their own rig? What followed was two years of hard work, building and testing wherever they could, from backyards to living rooms, putting in the time to get it right.

That work paid off when they took their system into a proper venue setting in 2025, running a full stage in the dark and proving to themselves that what they had built could hold its own.

And they have built something serious.

The system is rooted in that classic reggae and dub style but brought up to date with modern equipment. It is powered by Void amplifiers and fitted with 18Sound drivers, giving it both clean sound and real weight.

When it is fully running, the system delivers 22.4kW of power. That means strong mids and clear highs from the tops, solid punch from the subs and deep bass that you can properly feel through the scoops.

In a space like Kola’s basement, that kind of sound does not just play, it takes over the room.

Headlining the night is Workforce, joining as part of the Must Make Music tour. Many will know him from SpectraSoul, where he helped shape a deeper sound in drum and bass. His solo work carries that same feeling, proper music for a proper setting.

The rest of the lineup has been put together with care.

Tim Clay brings a raw jungle sound with heavy breaks and real energy. Changer, Bacca, Signify and DWR cover everything from 140 to jungle and drum and bass, keeping things moving all night without losing the flow.

On the mic, Freestyle and S-ENCE will be keeping the energy up from start to finish.
