Captain’s Log #10 – Community Over Competition: The Heart of Portsmouth Drum & Bass

Portsmouth’s Drum & Bass scene isn’t just about headliners — it’s about the people and collectives keeping the bass alive. Here’s a look at the Fleet that powers the city’s scene.

Crew,

Portsmouth’s Drum & Bass scene thrives not on one DJ, one promoter, or one night — it thrives on community. And right at the heart of it is the Pirate Rave Fleet — the crew of promoters, sound collectives, DJs, and studios keeping the basslines alive.

This isn’t just about who’s headlining. This is about everyone putting in the work behind the decks, behind the flyers, behind the console.

⚓ The Fleet

Here’s a look at the Portsmouth Drum & Bass powerhouses in our Fleet:

Substance Sounds
One of the city’s long-standing collectives, Substance Sounds has been championing local DnB talent and bringing serious vibes to underground nights. Known for both rolling deep and highlighting fresh selectors, they’re a staple in the South Coast bass scene.

Concrete Music
The crew behind some of Portsmouth’s biggest DnB nights, including Wilkinson at Guildhall. They consistently bring heavyweight names while supporting local DJs and ensuring that each event has the energy and professionalism the scene deserves.

Broadside Sound
A promoter and sound system collective known for high-energy sessions and club takeovers, focusing on full-on Drum & Bass vibes and giving rising DJs a platform to shine.

Track Shack Studios
The home of production and creativity — Track Shack Studios is where many of Portsmouth’s local producers fine-tune their tracks, building the sounds that will dominate future line-ups.

After Hours Audio
A label and DJ collective specialising in late-night sessions and after-party energy. They understand how to keep a crowd moving long after the main room has closed.

VillaniousDnB
Dedicated to raw, underground Drum & Bass, VillaniousDnB pushes darker, heavier rollers and jump-up styles. They’re the ones keeping the basslines heavy for the proper ravers.

Straindawg Promotions
Focused on curating events that mix both local talent and bigger acts. Straindawg Promotions has built a reputation for well-run, bass-heavy nights that bring the scene together.

ADHDnB
Known for high-energy, often experimental Drum & Bass nights that showcase new talent, ADHDnB is a hub for the curious and passionate, always seeking the next level in bass culture.

Prang8Seven & Mc Dunn DNB Show
Both artists and show hosts — their sets and broadcasts push the sound and culture, keeping listeners and fans engaged while highlighting Portsmouth talent on a wider scale.

Shell Shocked Sound
A versatile sound collective that brings both bass pressure and production expertise to events. They’ve been key players in building and supporting smaller grassroots nights that make the city’s DnB scene resilient.

🔊 Unity Over Rivalry

What makes Portsmouth’s DnB scene special isn’t just the acts themselves — it’s how they work together. Nights are shared, decks are rotated, and fans move from event to event because the scene thrives on collaboration, not competition.

Each member of the Fleet contributes differently:

  • Promoters craft nights and secure venues
  • DJs and MCs keep the floor alive
  • Studios and labels shape the sound and production
  • Collectives provide support, outreach, and community connections

When these forces combine, Portsmouth doesn’t just have events — it has a living, breathing Drum & Bass ecosystem.

🏴‍☠️ Why Community Matters

The big shows are great. The headliners pull crowds. But the scene survives and thrives because of community:

  • DJs supporting each other’s sets
  • Promoters collaborating instead of competing
  • Fans showing up not just for one name, but for the culture

Pirate Rave Productions exists to highlight this crew, this movement, this Fleet, because without them, the scene wouldn’t be what it is today.

Whether it’s Wilkinson at Guildhall, a late-night takeover by After Hours Audio, or a local set from VillaniousDnB, the heartbeat of Portsmouth Drum & Bass is the community standing behind it.

Support them. Respect them. Back the culture. And when you’re out on the floor, remember — you’re part of this Fleet too.
